Literature Text

And could I transmute
life and gild it with a sheen
of jade, softened by
tempura's of oxygen
eroding carbon.

And inspire
(Respire)

such metamorphosed air
as sweet as Philomela's song
sung in the boughs of the alchemist tree
resounding into nitrogenous air
and breaking the noise of sound.
No. 24 (24th April) for NaPoWriMo
No 10. for The-Poetry-Cafe's challenge
The theme was "Breathe Again" so I though of plant's and photosynthesis and how they "breathe" and then of how breathing affects how we speak... or sing. (I wanted to try something different to the general acceptance of breath, as emotional or restful.)

I didn't feel like this cohered properly...(Stanza 1 was meant to be "breathe" and Stanza 2 was "again") I managed to get the two theme's to link up, but I'm not sure it worked effectively. I already fiddled with it quite a bit, I suppose I could rearrange and add words which would mean the writing would never end... but time is limiting of course... and sometimes you just need to let it stay as it is and move on :(
Inspired (rather obviously) by Ovid's Metamorphoses, which was where I first encountered Philomela's story. (If you like Greek mythology and enjoy poetry try get a copy of the Penguin Classics translation)
