Literature Text

We heard her on the street without
her steps as unfaltering as September rains
before the sisters shook the oceans and the skies.

She would visit us then but by-and-bye
for it is dangerous to walk beneath unfalling heaven
that lies upon no arch, cerulean vault exposed
to elements of mankind.

And each receding visit she would bring gifts
of soft holly, birch, and strange, exotic things
so that we longed for what we knew:
the sharp branches of acacia
and fluid tissue of aloes,
ripe in verdure's grace.

So with a grimaced smile we accept
the visits of our Aunt.
And dream that we could ask her once again
when she might come with September Rains.
